Pros

  • Online mode adds extra layers to the game.
  • Good graphics in both the slower rural scenes and the faster and more action packed city scenes.
  • It has an almost cheesy excitement about it that will appeal to those who love zombie flicks.

Cons

  • The zombies are easy enough to kill that some players won't find the game exciting.
  • The graphics sometimes suffer from some glitches.
  • The zombies in the game share little in common with the zombies from the films.

Land of the Dead: Road to Fiddler's Green is a popular zombie game based on the work of legendary director George Romero. Romero started his career with the film "Night of the Living Dead" and eventually changed the way people thought about zombie movies. This first person shooter game used his film "Land of the Dead" as inspiration. That film took place in a futuristic world, but the game picks up before the events of the film and during the zombie apocalypse that characters mentioned in the film.

All players play as Jack. Jack is a farmer living in a rural community who wakes up one day and finds zombies roaming through his fields. After dispatching the zombies on the farm, players follow Jack to the city and continue killing the zombies that he encounters. After Jack learns about a safe place hidden in the city, which is the same one featured in the movie, players must find a way to get Jack there safely through the zombie plague.

Land of the Dead: Road to Fiddler's Green serves as a good introduction to the zombie genre, but those experienced with first person shooters will find the game severely lacking. The zombies move at such a slow pace that few players will have problems dispatching them before they attack. Reviews of the game also complained that the action scenes were laughable at best and that many of the scenes looked more like a cartoon and less like a horror game.

While some people were not happy with the game, others got a kick out of playing it. The graphics of the game are fairly impressive at times. Players will enjoy wandering through the cornfields and other areas of Jack's farm before finally moving into the dark and sometimes frightening city. Those with an Internet connection can move from traditional play into the online mode, which lets them work together with other players to battle the invading zombies.

While the game itself does not share much in common with the slow but smart zombies from the films, it has an almost cheesy quality about it that many will love. Those searching for a game that will introduce them to the first person shooter and zombie games will love it. Even advanced players may still have some fun playing this game. They can laugh at the bad music and enjoy roaming through the fields and city streets to get Jack to safety. Though it isn't the best game, it has enough fun for most players.
